“Nothing is worth putting my health on the line. Not a camera, not a title. Nothing.”

Lessons from Marcel Hirscher

# 1 — Set yourself realistic goals.

Goals are important in order to move forward on a personal as well as professional level. Think in small, achievable steps. The sum of many little achievements makes you stronger. Running after big, unrealistic goals would be just pure frustration.

# 2 — Success is a matter of perspective.

Only you know what achievements you are proud of. Who else better than you, is aware of the reasons behind that? Don’t take other peoples’ judgements more important than your owns, with that in mind you give them more power.

# 3 — Learn to accept defeats.

It’s not always easy to see instantly the positive aspect in a defeat. It’s true, one can learn from mistakes. A defeat forces you basically to re-consider your own ordinary habits. Creative ideas and new pathways can be created and opened up through that. Look at routine as the enemy of any creativity.

# 4 — Focus on the moment.

Focus always on the thing you are doing right now. Don’t deal with things that you can’t influence in that particular moment. If you always keep in the back of your mind why you did not succeed in something, you will always feel blocked and limited in your actions.

# 5 — Success is not everything.

You need to realise that success does not make you a better person, but also defeat does not make you a worse person. For people you love, other values matter in life and other people you don’t really need in your life.

# 6 — Question your values and what really matters in life.

If you are able to make your happiness not dependent on victories or defeats, you will be able to manage and master challenges in life in a much more relaxed way. Make yourself aware of what really matters in your life: your professional success or maybe your family and friends. Ask yourself: What can you renounce more easily: applause or your health?
